Inquiry Learning Activity

1) The Inquiry based learning activity I choose was from the webquest locator link. This particular webquest was titled "A Journey Through Time", and focused on geology and different geological periods. The students were asked to form a team and research a specific geological period. After their period was selected, they needed to create an original travel brochure, which highlights the dominant life forms, position of the continents, and the climate of their geological period. There was appropriate links for resources, and combined the use of group work as well as original and personal work. The link is : http://www.longwood.k12.ny.us/lhs/teach/webq/aschneidertime/page7.html

2) This webquest is appropriate for either middle school or high school Earth Science students.
It meets the following NYS Science Standards:
Standard 4
Key Idea 1: As we look at Earth, we find clues to its origin and how it has changed through nearly five billion years as well as the evolution of life on Earth.
3) Inquiry Definition

Inquiry is a type of learning paradigm where students are asked to analyze, interpret, and create new information. There is no concrete right or wrong answer; instead, children formulate their own hypothesis and conclusion based on research, discussion, group work, and role play. Inquiry based learning is different then regular class participation in the fact that it is a system of self discovery and personal exploration. Students are asked to construct their own meanings from the given information and to evaluate it based on their own personal experiences within a group atmosphere. They are asked to research and investigate a particular problem and then analyze and interpret appropriate solutions.
